Solutions to common issues and frequently asked questions.
Common issues
Section titled “Common issues”Variables not replacing
Section titled “Variables not replacing”If variables show as {FieldName} in the output:
- Check the field name matches exactly (case-sensitive).
- Use the Variables page to copy the exact syntax.
- Remove any extra spaces inside the braces.
Template upload fails
Section titled “Template upload fails”- Verify the file is
.docxformat (not.doc). - Keep the file under 10 MB — very large templates can fail to upload.
- Use Microsoft Word to create templates. WPS Office and others may cause formatting issues.
Generation errors
Section titled “Generation errors”- Check the template for invalid placeholders.
- Verify the record has the required data.
- Simplify the template and test incrementally.
[Object object] appears in the output
Section titled “[Object object] appears in the output”If you see [Object object] instead of actual values:
- Confirm the placeholder name matches exactly in the Variables page.
- For linked records, use dot notation:
{Company.Name}, not{Company}. - For multi-link fields, use loop syntax:
{#Items}...{/Items}. - Some lookup field types (such as Attachment lookups) are not supported — use the source field instead.
Permission denied / cannot modify templates
Section titled “Permission denied / cannot modify templates”If you see permission errors when creating or editing templates:
- You need Editor or Full Access permission on the Lark Base, not just View permission — see Permissions.
- Ask the Base owner to grant you Editor access.
- Users with View-only access can still generate documents using existing templates.
- Lark limitation: if you cannot share the base, some API features may not work.
Can I use images in my template?
Yes. Static images are preserved. You can also use dynamic image replacement — set the image
alt text to {FieldName}. See Dynamic images.
Can I generate PDF?
Yes, PDF conversion is available on all plans. Enable it in Template Setup.
Can I use AutomaDoc with multiple bases?
Yes. Each base has its own templates. Switch bases in Lark and AutomaDoc adapts automatically.
How do I view all my templates?
Visit the Company Portal (company.automadoc.cc) to see all templates across all bases in the My Templates section.
